Lehigh Valley Health Network Hazleton Patient Tower
MKSD was tasked with the challenge of updating 6-stories of LVHN’s hospital in Hazleton, Pa. The hospital had been intermittently updated over the years, leaving it with a dated and incohesive look. MKSD unified the tower by using the same soothing color palette throughout that coordinates with the variety of existing finishes. Accent colors and graphics were strategically added to give each floor its own identity. The refurbishment of the interiors completely transforms the staff and patient experiences.
LVHN’s goal was to convert the undersized double-patient rooms to single-patient rooms. MKSD modified the patient room headwalls to allow existing double-patient rooms to appear as single-patient rooms, while allowing them to be reverted to double rooms if necessary.
In order to keep the hospital fully operational during renovation, MKSD implemented a complex phasing plan that took place over a year and a half. To stay within the Department of Health compliance, the walls, ceilings, doors, and building systems were left intact.
This project is an example of how MKSD works within a project’s constraints and collaborates with owners to identify ways to maximize potential.
